High winds cut power to 60K Indiana homes, businesses

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - High winds buffeting Indiana have left more than 60,000 homes and businesses without power.

Duke Energy reported about 46,000 customers without power as of 5:30 p.m. Saturday, from north-central to southwestern Indiana.

Indianapolis Power and Light reported nearly 17,000 outages in its district covering Indianapolis and surrounding areas.

The National Weather Service says a high wind warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. for all but far northern and southern Indiana, with wind gusts of 45 to 55 mph or higher forecast.

The weather service says the winds will fade as a low pressure system pushes east of the region.

But a freeze warning will cover much of the state overnight, with lows forecast to fall into the middle 20s over the north and about 30 in the far south.
