Man wounded by police after Indianapolis standoff

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - State police say a southern Indiana man was shot and badly wounded by officers after he pointed a shotgun at them following a six-hour standoff in Indianapolis.

The standoff began Thursday when 57-year-old Douglas Gaultney of Knox County barricaded himself inside a van as officers for the town of Speedway tried to arrest him for violating probation on a marijuana charge.

Indianapolis, Speedway and state police converged on the scene and tried for hours to convince Gaultney to surrender.

When officers used tear gas and an armored state police vehicle Thursday evening to try to force Gaultney to give up, they say he left the van and pointed his shotgun at officers.

Several officers opened fire, wounding Gaultney, who hospitalized in critical condition.
