First Division Museum in Wheaton to get $7M renovation

WHEATON, Ill. (AP) - A museum dedicated to the U.S. Army's First Division is getting a $7 million update to include more information about recent missions in Afghanistan, Iraq and other regions.

The Daily Herald reports (bit.ly/1RRmfWK) the improvements to the First Division Museum at Cantigny Park in Wheaton will celebrate all 100 years of the military unit's history.

The museum was founded in 1960 and hasn't seen any major renovations since it moved to its current building in 1992.

Current exhibits span the period from the division's beginning in 1917 through the Vietnam War.

Executive Director Paul Herbert says the division is still active and "It's got more story to tell."

About 170,000 people visit the museum annually.

The museum will close on Veterans Day and reopen in the summer of 2017.
