Small city hopes for boost from reopening golf course

ELWOOD, Ind. (AP) - A small central Indiana city is hoping for an economic boost by helping reopen a golf course that was a centerpiece of a planned subdivision.

The Elwood City Council has approved a proposal to buy the Cattails Golf Course for up to $250,000. City officials then hope to have a private operator rebuild and run the course.

Mayor Todd Jones tells The (Anderson) Herald Bulletin (http://bit.ly/1Vc5DYW ) that reopening the golf course is an opportunity the community shouldn't pass up. He hopes the golf course reopening will encourage construction on some 80 empty house lots in the surrounding subdivision.

Jones says the lack of higher-end housing has made it difficult to attract families to the 9,000-person city about 30 miles north of Indianapolis.
