Grayslake North blanks Grant
Maddie Wilkinson scored the game's only goal, freshman Emily Dunne earned her first varsity shutout, and Grayslake North's girls soccer team edged host Grant 1-0 in nonconference action Tuesday.
"After a long spring break, it was nice to get back on the field as a team, as we continue to try progressing and improving with the new pieces of this year's team," Grayslake North coach Adam DeCaluwe said. "We showed many positives throughout the game, including an increased desire to win 50/50s, play with purpose, as well as create and finish chances consistently in our attacking third."
The Knights scored six minutes into the game off a corner kick. Lauren Davis served a cross that fellow sophomore Wilkinson redirected into the back of the net with her first touch.
"After that, we may have taken our foot off the gas a little bit," DeCaluwe said. "We were able to complete many passes and showed quality intent, but couldn't find that final pass or touch to allow us to make the game comfortable and put them away. Grant fought hard and made us compete until the final whistle."
Lakes 2, Wauconda 2: Kayla Wisniewski scored the tying goal (her fifth of the season) late in the second half for the visiting Bulldogs in the North Suburban Prairie opener.
Lakes jumped out to a 2-0 lead.
"There was definitely some rust coming off our spring break, but we shook it off and put a solid game together," Wauconda coach Beau Shogren said. "Lakes had some real athletes throughout the lineup that proved to be our best challenge of the season so far."
Freshman Olivia Kuch scored her first varsity goal for Wauconda just before the end of the first half.
"We will take this draw, especially after being down," Shogren said. "We are very proud of the effort by our girls today."
Casey Mocynski and Alyssa Bombicino scored for Lakes (0-1-2). Bombicino also had an assist, as did Bella Pighini.
Vernon Hills 2, Antioch 0: Erin Vandermerkt scored in each half, including once on a penalty kick, and Cassie Pappano recorded the shutout with 7 saves, as the Cougars won the North Suburban Prairie opener.
"Big win for our girls tonight," coach Mike McCaulou said after his Cougars improved to 3-1. "We are seeing improvement every day, and we are starting to figure some things out as a team. It is still very early in the season, and we have a lot to improve on, but we couldn't be more proud of the ladies for buying into the system and working hard day in and day out. Antioch has a quality team and a couple special players that can be dangerous. I thought there keeper stood on her head tonight and was incredible."
Antioch keeper Monica Wilhelm made 7 saves, including an acrobatic stop off the line.
Warren 11, Zion-Benton 0: The Blue Devils scored seven times in the second half of the North Suburban Lake opener.
Ellen Szostak had 4 goals and 2 assists for Warren, while Teagan Albert and Kaitlyn Chomko each scored twice. Courtney Chomko, Sangjun Hornewer and Ayusha Ayalur also had goals.
Kaitlyn Chomko added a pair of assists. Courtney Chomko, Albert, Lindsay Ditmars and Hornewer contributed assists as well. Lydia Sundberg had 2 saves in net, as Warren improved to 2-1.
