Stolen statue of Polish general returns to East Chicago park

EAST CHICAGO, Ind. (AP) - A ceremony is planned to celebrate the return of a bronze statue honoring a Polish Revolutionary War hero that was stolen from an East Chicago park.

The (Munster) Times (http://bit.ly/1Mxxm4K ) reports the ceremony to unveil the repaired statue of Gen. Thaddeus Kosciuszko (kahs-ee-AHS'-koh) is scheduled Tuesday. The only parts left at the park were the statue's feet when it was taken in September.

The city hired a sculptor to restore the statue. East Chicago spokesman Steve Segura says it was important for Mayor Anthony Copeland to get the statue restored because of what it means to the community.

Kosciuszko volunteered for the American army during the Revolutionary War and is a symbol of pride for Polish-Americans.
