Visiting Angels of South Elgin hosts pet food collection

Visiting Angels of South Elgin, 65 Woodbury St., will hold its third annual pet food collection April 1 to May 1.

Help support the Salvation Army Golden Diners program and RunFurShelter as they collect pet food. This collection helps seniors in the community care for their pets.

Drop off nonperishable pet food items between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays.

Also, sign up for the "RunFurShelter" 5/10K Run/Walk set for Sunday, May 22. The race will begin at Advocate Sherman Outpatient Care Center, 2000 McDonald Road in South Elgin. The 10K begins at 7:45 a.m. followed by the 5K at 8 a.m. Online registration for the 10K or 5K is $35 for age 12 or older. Cost for the 5K for age 6 to 11 is $20. It is $5 for kids, age 6 and younger, in the 100-meter sprint. Day-of registration is $40 for the 10K/5K for age 12 or older.

The 5K walk/run, 10K run, and kids' 100-meter sprint will support the mission of RunFurShelter to raise funds to provide food, shelter and medical necessities for companion pets. RunFurShelter has partnered with the Salvation Army Golden Diners Program which serves more than 1,000 senior citizens in Kane and McHenry counties. Through this meal program, a need was identified for many seniors who have difficulty feeding their pets. Proceeds from the 2016 run will be used to purchase pet food for pets of individuals in the Salvation Army's Golden Diners Program.
