Prospect edges out Huntley

Prospect's baseball team stayed perfect this season by picking up a most efficient victory over Huntley in nonconference play.

Ryan Molini had 2 of the Knights' 5 hits and scored the game's only run in the fourth inning as Prospect edged the Red Raiders 1-0.

Starter Pasquale Atteo allowed 4 hits in 4⅓ innings, and reliever Jake Arndt gave up 1 hits in 2⅔ innings. They combined to strike out six and walk five while withstanding a pair of errors to share the shutout for Prospect (3-0).

Grant Zellmer drove in the run for the Knights, and Trevor Engquist had a double.

Hoffman Estates 4, Maine West 2: Ryan Ward pitched a complete game in helping the visiting Hawks pick up a nonconference victory, and Luke Kulton supplied the power for Hoffman Estates with a go-ahead 2-run homer in the sixth inning.

Marc Gonzales scored an insurance run for the Hawks in the seventh inning when he singled with two outs, stole second base and scored on a single by Kevin Howell.

Ward allowed 4 hits and 2 unearned runs.

Alex Zimmerman went the distance for Maine West, striking out five and walking one.

Palatine 7, South Elgin 2: Chris Refka was sharp on the mound and big contributor at the plate as well as host Palatine earned a 7-2 decision over the Storm in nonconference play.

Refka won a complete-game effort, striking out six and walking none while allowing 7 hits. He also went 2-for-2 with a walk as Palatine (4-3) out-hit South Elgin 8-7.

Zach Oles (2-for-4) doubled and drove in 1 run, and Danny Schneberger doubled and drove in 2.

Grant 7, Barrington 2: The Broncos suffered their first setback of the season, falling to 5-1 after a loss to the Bulldogs in nonconference play.

Jake Zyzda took the loss, but only 2 of the 7 runs he allowed over 6 inning were earned, as Barrington committed 4 errors.

Tristan Michaels had a pair of hits for the Broncos.

York 7, Rolling Meadows 4: The host Mustangs jumped ahead 4-2 after the second inning, but York produced a 4-run second inning and was able to hang on for a nonconference win.

Ryan Laboda and Luka Pavlakis both had a pair of hits for Meadows (0-3), which committed 7 errors.

Leyden 6, Fenton 1: Kevin Nevarez led the offense for host Leyden, going 2-for-3 with singles in the fourth and fifth innings at Triton Community College.

Eagles pitcher Michael Wilms allowed 1 earned run on 4 hits and no walks over 6 innings. He struck out seven.

Leyden took the lead for good in the first inning, scoring 2 runs on a groundout by Jeremy Borges.

The Eagles added 4 runs in the fifth. Matt Bach kicked it off with a single, scoring Borges and Teo Vargas. Nevarez followed with a single, scoring Bach.

Conant sweeps Geneva: Ian Taylor belted a 3-run triple in the fifth inning to help spark the Cougars' 6-1 nonconference win over Geneva.

Hiro Fukuda got the win, allowed 1 run over four innings. He struck out three, walked none and gave up 5 hits.

Conant (1-3) never trailed after scoring 3 runs in the fourth on.

In Game 1, Conant edged Geneva 3-2.

Conant took a 1-0 lead in the third inning that started with a single by CJ Deshazer. Jimmy Brady later singled, bringing home Jack Lunkes for the first run.

The Cougars broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning when Jack Lunkes scored on a RBI single by Ryan Roberts.

Jack Reiger went 1-3 for Conant (2-3). He belted a homer in the fourth inning.

Matt Mills turned in a complete game for Conant, allowing 2 earned runs, 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out three.

Conant took a 1-0 lead in the third inning that started with a single by CJ Deshazer. Jimmy Brady later singled, bringing home Jack Lunkes for the first run.
