Mattoon memorializes fatal fire truck accident

MATTOON, Ill. (AP) - The fire department in the central Illinois city of Mattoon plans to dedicate a plaque commemorating a fatal collision of two fire trucks 50 years ago.

The Journal Gazette & Times-Courier reports (http://bit.ly/1RBio9Q) the ceremony is set for Tuesday afternoon at the intersection where the trucks collided.

The trucks were coming from different directions to a reported grass fire. The crash killed firefighter Robert DeMars and injured several other firefighters.

Retired Mattoon firefighter Webb Timm, who was driving one of the trucks, says he remembers swerving because he couldn't stop in time. The Charleston resident says he thinks about the accident every day.
