Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley celebrates two milestones

On Saturday, April 9, Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley ReStore will celebrate its 10th anniversary and the local chapter will kick off its 100th house by pre-building walls, for which anyone may participate, in the ReStore parking lot, 800 N. State St. in Elgin.

On April 8, 2006, ReStore Elgin opened its doors.

Since that time it has achieved notable accomplishments:

• Funded 47 houses

• Diverted 7,500 tons of materials from landfills

• Received Elgin Image Award in 2011

• Provided $100,000 in sales tax revenue to the City of Elgin

• Recycled over one million pounds of electronics

• Helped thousands of people fix up their homes with quality materials sold at a fraction of retail prices.

On April 9, ReStore will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a day of sales, crafts for adults and children, hot dogs and more.

There will also be a "Storage Wars" like raffle of mystery contents, valued at $1,000, locked in a construction trailer.

Tickets for the raffle will be $10 each or 3 for $20. The raffle for the mystery contents will begin Tuesday, March 29, and will go through Saturday, April 9.

In 1991, Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley completed its first house at 479 Fremont St. in Elgin. Twenty-five years later, the chapter will start to build its 100th house directly across the street at 482 Fremont.

While the ceremonial wall raising will occur on May 20, they will pre-build exterior walls in the ReStore parking lot on Saturday, April 9, during ReStore's 10th anniversary celebration.

The public is invited to help build the walls that day. Sponsorships of the 100th house are also available. For details, contact Barbara Beckman, executive director, at (847) 836-1432.
