New commander picked for Indiana Guard's Camp Atterbury
EDINBURGH, Ind. (AP) - The Indiana National Guard has named a new commander for its Camp Atterbury training base.
Guard officials say Col. John Silva will take command of the base near Edinburgh effective June 1. He will replace Col. Richard Shatto, who has been the Camp Atterbury commander since December 2013.
Silva is currently a fiscal and property officer at the Guard's Indianapolis headquarters and was previously Atterbury's deputy commander.
Shatto is moving to a new position as deputy chief of staff to the Indiana Guard's joint staff director.
The 35,000-acre Camp Atterbury has served as a training site for military units from across the country, including many that were deployed to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
