LaPorte bans motorists' use of cell phones in school zones

LAPORTE, Ind. (AP) - A northern Indiana city has banned motorists from using their cellphones in school zones when pedestrians are present or school events are under way.

The LaPorte City Council voted unanimously Monday in favor of the new ordinance that calls for fines of $100 for people who violate the new rule.

The South Bend Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1LETSZ9 ) the ordinance also bans motorist cellphone use within 1,000 feet of a high school football game or any school event where pedestrians and spectators are present.

LaPorte resident David Wolf told the council he wished the cellphone ban for motorists included the entire city because of the dangers posed by using the devices while driving.

He said that "operating a vehicle is a full-time job" that requires the drivers' undivided attention.
