2 sue Illinois village over investigation of officer's death

CHICAGO (AP) - An Illinois village faces a lawsuit from two men who say they were targeted during an investigation into the death of a police officer who authorities later determined staged his suicide to appear he was gunned down in the line of duty.

In the lawsuit filed Monday in federal court in Chicago, Preston Shrewsbury and Manuel Vargas say officers harassed them and violated their civil rights in the days after Fox Lake Police Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz's Sept. 1 death. Authorities launched a search for three men Gliniewicz said he was pursuing.

Authorities say Gliniewicz killed himself because he believed his theft from a youth program was about to be exposed.

Fox Lake officials declined to comment on the lawsuit.

A third man sued last year, alleging racial discrimination.
