Brad Davis' first goal with Sporting KC beats Toronto FC 1-0
KANSAS CITY, Kansas (AP) - Brad Davis scored the first goal with his new team, helping unbeaten Sporting Kansas City stay atop the MLS standings with 1-0 win over Toronto FC.
Davis joined Sporting KC for his 15th season in the MLS after spending a decade at the Houston Dynamo.
He beat defender Justin Morrow to a loose ball and slotted a left-foot shot into the far corner in the 70th minute Sunday to secure KC's third win from as many games. It was his 56th career MLS goal.
Sporting KC was reduced to 10 men in the 84th when Roger Espinoza was sent off for a serious foul but the hosts held firm, and Toronto missed a chance for an equalizer when Sebastian Giovonco's free kick hit the defensive wall in the last minute of stoppage time.
The Philadelphia Union won their home opener 3-0 over the 10-man New England Revolution and moved into a share of top spot in the Eastern Conference on six points with Montreal.
C.J. Sapong had two first-half goals, both left foot shots from crossed by Fabinho in the 18th and Creavalle in the 33rd. Sebastien Le Toux capped the scoring in stoppage time.
Winless New England played with 10 men after Je-Vaughn Watson was sent off for a studs-up challenge on Roland Alberg in the 36th minute.
In the only other match Sunday, D.C. United salvaged a 1-1 draw with Fabian Espindola's 80th-minute equalizer against the Colorado Rapids canceling out Dillon Powers' header from Marco Pappa's corner in the 69th minute.
