Historic train cars set for restoration in Indiana city

PERU, Ind. (AP) - Two historic train cars that once served as the dining area of a northern Indiana restaurant are being prepped for full restorations to turn them into local attractions.

Project manager Steve Anderson says the 60-ton passenger cars that were ordered by the Milwaukee Road railway company in 1946 will be restored to their original condition.

The Kokomo Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1RUgbXs ) the cars had been the dining areas of the now-shuttered restaurant. The eatery's former owner recently donated them to the city of Peru.

Josh Sigler of Peru's mayor's office says the train cars "are extremely valuable" and the city is seeking grants and donors to fund their restoration.

He says once restored, the train cars will help boost economic development efforts in the city about 80 miles north of Indianapolis.
