S. Jacksonville names 5K in honor of officer killed in crash
JACKSONVILLE, Ill. (AP) - An annual 5K run and walk is being renamed in honor of a central Illinois police officer who was killed while responding to a traffic accident.
The Jacksonville Journal-Courier reports (bit.ly/1LxnZlr) the South Jacksonville Celebration's 5K is now known as the Officer Scot Fitzgerald Memorial 5K. The race is scheduled for July 30.
Fitzgerald died after his squad car collided with an ambulance along state Route 267 earlier this month. The 32-year-old was married and the father of two children.
Police Chief Josh Hallock says the race will be a continuing tribute to the officer.
Proceeds from the event will go toward an educational fund for Fitzgerald's children.
Hallock says officials want to help the Fitzgerald family any way they can. He says "The 5K is a good start."
