Nine years in prison for threatening cops with gun in Aurora

A Kane County judge sentenced a St. Charles man to nine years in prison Friday for pointing a gun at Aurora police officers last summer.

Erik Esparza, 21, was convicted last month of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a gang member, and resisting/obstructing a police officer.

The case stems from an encounter with police July 12 when officers sighted a suspicious vehicle with four men inside on Aurora's southeast side.

Esparza and a companion who were armed got out and began walking in a neighborhood. They pointed their guns at police, causing one officer to fire his weapon at the pair. No one was injured.

Esparza gets credit for 244 days served in the Kane County jail, a spokesman for State's Attorney Joe McMahon said.
