Chicago's Shedd Aquarium introduces new sea otter pup, Ellie

CHICAGO (AP) - Shedd Aquarium's new sea otter pup now has a name.

The pup rescued from a California beach in January was introduced to the public at the Chicago aquarium on Friday as "Ellie."

Aquarium members cast more than 1,500 votes to select the name. It comes from Carmel Beach, the place where the pup was found alone on Jan. 6.

Monterey Bay Aquarium's Sea Otter Program staff took the pup in after attempts to find her mother were unsuccessful.

Shedd Aquarium - which has 25 years of experience caring for sea otter pups - took over caring for her on Jan. 27. For several weeks she was known only as Pup 719.

Shedd officials say Ellie is growing quickly, eating solid foods and sleeping through the night.
