Proposed Fort Wayne annexation would coast Allen County $5M

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - Allen County estimates it would lose $5 million in revenue if a proposed expansion of Fort Wayne's city limits goes through.

The Journal Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/1VgYTJx ) that Mayor Tom Henry's administration estimated that the annexation of 23 square miles of land north of the city would generate about $10 million in property tax revenue for the city, while Allen County would lose about $1.5 million in property taxes.

But Chief Deputy Auditor Nick Jordan told the County Council on Thursday the annexation could end up costing the county about $5.4 million because of other taxes the county collects.

The annexation would add about 22,000 residents to Fort Wayne, increasing its population by 9 percent to about 275,000 people.
