Prospect Heights Alderman Derwin resigning from city council

Prospect Heights 5th Ward Alderman David Derwin submitted his letter of resignation from the board, effective at the end of the month, at Monday night's board meeting.

Prospect Heights Mayor Nick Helmer said Derwin, who was elected as alderman in last April's election, resigned because he is moving to Des Plaines.

“I'm somewhat saddened that he won't be on this team anymore and that I'll have to look for someone who can serve the 5th ward like he did,” Helmer said.

Derwin's term expires in 2019, and Helmer he will likely take the allotted 60 days to find a new person to fill the post.

“We're going to send mailings to the 5th ward and ask for volunteers to see if anyone is interested in the position,” Helmer said.

Then, staff will vet each applicant to see who is the most qualified.

“We'll see who's the most knowledgeable about the city and has experience with city issues,” Helmer said.

Helmer said the 5th ward includes about 650 houses and more than 1,000 citizens.
