Health agency says mumps cases spread beyond IU-Bloomington

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - The Monroe County Health Department says cases of mumps are increasing in the Bloomington area and have spread beyond the Indiana University campus.

The agency said Tuesday it has confirmed 14 cases of mumps among students on the campus and in the greater Monroe Çounty area.

The Herald-Times reports (http://bit.ly/1YXpw6a ) the agency says in a news release the cases do not appear to be linked, which indicates that the virus is spreading in the community and mumps cases could increase.

Mumps have been reported this year on at least two other college campuses, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and Butler University, also in Indianapolis.

The virus is spread by sneezing and coughing, and symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, swollen glands and loss of appetite.
