Police: Streamwood man caught in basement of Elgin house

Elgin police said Saturday they found a Streamwood man hiding in the basement of a home where they were investigating a homeowner's call about a residential burglary in progress about 8 a.m. Friday.

The homeowner told police he called 911 from a neighbor's house after fleeing his own home when he heard footsteps coming from the second floor.

Responding officers set up a perimeter around the single-family home on the 200 block of Vincent Place, then had a team of officers search the interior.

Jahashi Hutton, 22, of the 0-100 block Buckskin Lane, Streamwood, IL, was in possession of several of the homeowners belongings when officers found him in the basement, police said in a new release. He was charged with felony residential burglary and misdemeanor resisting arrest.

Hutton is being held in Kane County jail on $100,000 and would have to post $10,000 to be released while the case is pending.

"The homeowner did an amazing job and gets almost all of the credit in this case," Investigations Bureau Cmdr. Dan O'Shea said in the news release. "His quick and smart decision to leave the house and call 911 so officers could get there and search the house led to the arrest."

Hutton is currently on parole for other offenses, police said.
