1 cyclist dead, 7 injured in Spain, octogenarian driver held
MADRID (AP) - Police say a 52-year-old cyclist has died and seven others have been injured, three of them seriously, after being slammed into by an SUV near the northwestern Spanish town of A Guarda.
An 87-year-old man was arrested at a restaurant not far from the scene of Saturday's accident, police say, adding that he apparently tried to overtake a pack of cyclists but managed to hit several.
The driver failed to stop and attend the injured. Police say he stopped at a nearby restaurant where he raised the alarm and was then arrested pending an investigation.
Luis Testero, a cyclist in the group who was not injured, told reporters the driver struck the riders from behind without stopping, flinging some into the air.
