Don't let Trump set nation back

In my 50-plus years as a voter. I have absolutely no recollection of any candidate who has stirred such negative emotions in me as Donald Trump has been able to do.

The title of commander in chief is bestowed upon the person deemed most capable to lead this country in time of peril. How can a draft dodger lead the U.S.A?

Four student deferments were not adequate to keep him out of the draft, so he received a medical deferment. During Donald Trump's third and fourth student deferments, John McCain was shot down and more than 12,000 young, American lives were lost in Vietnam.

At the time, the draft dodger was probably more concerned about the decision of whether he should use Brylcreem or Wildroot on his exceptional pompadour, instead of serving his country honorably.

Much more telling and foreboding is the darkness in this man's soul. Donald Trump preys upon the latent racism and xenophobia in this country, which will always exist in man, but a demagogue of his ilk foments and brings it closer to the surface for his own purpose. "Make America great again" is a ridiculous campaign slogan that has no merit whatsoever and serves only to exclude by selection and certainly does not reflect what has always made this country great.

Prejudice and bias is inherent in humans, but the mark of a prospering society is the fact that we learn from our mistakes as a nation and bridge the gap in regard to our differences. That is what makes us who we are. Olive Harvey College in Chicago is named for Milton Olive and Carmel Harvey, who were killed in Vietnam. One black boy and one white boy. Milton Olive fell on a hand grenade and saved the lives of young white boys. Don't let Donald Trump take that away from us.
