South Bend considers ban on smoking in all public places

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - A South Bend Common Council member has introduced a proposal to ban smoking in all public places in the northern Indiana city.

The South Bend Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1P2w38m ) it will be the third time in as many years the council has considered expanding the smoking ban. A similar ban failed last year when a council member who is no longer in office withdrew her support at the last minute.

Council member Oliver Davis says the proposed ban would harm South Bend businesses. He said patrons who want to smoke will simply go to Mishawaka or into the county instead.

The council will consider the proposed ban later this month. If enacted, the ban would take effect Aug. 1.
