Jury selection scheduled in killing of Gary police officer

CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) - Jury selection has been scheduled to begin in January in the trial of a man accused of killing of a Gary police officer.

The (Munster) Times (http://bit.ly/1QNS4da ) reports 27-year-old Carl Blount was in court for a hearing Wednesday. Blount is charged with murder in the July 2014 shooting death of Patrolman Jeffrey Westerfield. He has pleaded not guilty.

Jury selection is set to start Jan. 9 and is expected to last about a month. The state is scheduled to begin presenting evidence Feb. 6.

Police have said Westerfield was shot in his squad car as he searched for Blount, who was a suspect in a domestic disturbance.

The Lake County prosecutor's office is seeking the death penalty against Blount.
