Bartlett Library patrons learn about Celtic Crosses
On March 9, patrons of the Bartlett Library were able to learn about the history of the High Crosses in Ireland that the Chicago area headstones are modeled after.
The program visited different cemeteries in the Chicago area that contain Celtic Cross headstones. The meanings of the Celtic Cross sections were explained in great detail, and Christian icons as well as Pagan and Irish symbols were decoded.
Presenter Laurel Mellien has been presenting on cemetery art symbolism since 2009, but this was her first time presenting at the Bartlett Library.
Some of the topics touched upon at the program were the different symbols used on the actual headstones, such as the harp, claddagh, shamrock and more.
Mellien also went into detail about the structure of the headstones, which consist of the capstone, wheel, shaft and base.
With each item that Mellien brought up, she delved deep into its symbolism and history, making the program a truly education experience.
One of the patrons in attendance was Deb Schmitt.
Schmitt really enjoyed the program. "There was a lot of information that I never knew before," Schmitt said. "I'm not Irish, but I just wanted to learn more about it when I saw the program in the newsletter."
Schmitt continued with, "I love coming to the [Bartlett Library's] free presentations; I'm here at least once a week to go to them or use their other resources."
