Fremd powers past Buffalo Grove in season opener

Robert DePau and Alex Nicholas scored 6 goals apiece to help host Fremd past Buffalo Grove 20-9 for a victory in its season opener on Wednesday in boys water polo.

Buffalo Grove was led in scoring in the Mid-Suburban League divisional crossover by Ryan Lawson with 3 goals.

Wheeling 15, Conant 12: The defending MSL East champs picked up a quality road win against last year's MSL West second-place finisher.

St. Viator 6, St. Patrick 5: Michael Baker scored twice and Will McEvoy, Ethan Johnson, Dante Cerone and Stephen Battin each had single goals to lift the Lions.

Von Steuben 15, Maine West 12: The Warriors dropped a nonconference season opener despite a 9-goal effort from Brendan Atwood.

Palatine 14, Hersey 5: Senior Ivan Turkan led the way with a 6-goal effort as the host Pirates came up with an MSL crossover victory at Fremd.

Senior Marcus Carter-Buckman and sophomore Sean O'Brien both had a pair of goals for Palatine in its season opener, and goalie Jake Conrad stopped 4 shots and had 3 assists.

Hersey (0-2) was held scoreless in the first half.

Barrington 9, Rolling Meadows 5: Two-meter set John Fischer scored 3 times and Mitch Gavars had 2 goals as Barrington improved to 1-1. Jack Krieps stopped 8 shots in goal for the Broncos.
