Quilts of Valor to honor 16 veterans at Saturday luncheon

The Elgin branch of the Land of Lincoln Quilts of Valor is doing a presentation at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 12, at Christ the Lord Lutheran Church, 12N462 Tina Trail in Elgin.

They will be honoring 16 veterans for their service to this country. After the ceremony, the ladies of the church will be providing a light lunch in the fellowship hall for the veterans and their family members. This will give everyone a chance to visit and personally thank these men and women for their service.

The ladies who make the quilts also will have a display table to show the community the process of getting a quilts done from start to finish. In just 17 months, they have produced dozens of quilts.

Quilts of Valor is a grass roots organization started by Catherine Roberts in 2003. She is a quilter and wanted a way to say "thank you" to our military people who were coming back from the Gulf War. She wanted to give them a quilt to express her appreciation for their sacrifice and dedication to this country. So she started quilting and got her friends to join her.

Now in 2016 there are quilters in every state in the union making quilts for all veterans who gave of themselves to protect this country and our freedom. In Northern Illinois alone, there are many locations in Kane, Kendall, Cook, DuPage and McHenry counties where quilters sew every month to produce these quilts of love. Quilts of Valor are awarded to veterans as a way for the community to say "thank you." Visit www.lolqov.blogspot.com.
