Glenbard East presents two plays before IHSA competition

Two dramas that Glenbard East High School will present at the Illinois High School Association competition can be seen by the local community first.

"Doubt" and "In the Time of the Butterflies" will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, March 16 and 17, at Glenbard East High School, 1014 S. Main St., Lombard. Tickets, $3, are available at the door. For information, call (630) 424-6640.

The Tony Award-winning drama "Doubt" is Glenbard East's entry in the IHSA One-Act Play Competition. Cast members include Nick Karris, Maggie Joyce, Maya Ogolini and Aneesah Phillips.

"In the Time of the Butterflies" by Julia Alvarez is an adaptation of the novel and a new drama that is Glenbard East's entry for the IHSA Group Interpretation or Readers Theatre Competition.

Cast members include Chris Turner, Alex Stratton, Renatta Leighton, Abby Griffeth, Cassie Piper, Maddie Novak, Tay Roylance, Eden Dolinski, Giorgia Novak, Amanda O'Brien, Sam Batjes, Ethan Kamperman, Nathaniel Gray, Zach Wolf, Lilly Zuniga, Molly Fidlow, Helen Zguri and Graeme Leighton.

A historical fiction, "In the Time of the Butterflies" centers around the real lives of the Mirabal sisters. The story is set in the Dominican Republic and highlights the family's struggle against the powerful dictatorship of Gen. Rafael Trujillo, considered to be one of Latin America's most ruthless leaders.

It is a tragic tale that highlights the courageous journey of the sisters who fought to bring change to a corrupt system.

Both productions will be presented again Saturday, March 19, at Reavis High School in Burbank as part of the ISHA sectional.
