Indiana homeless shelters, services get $16M from feds

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A federal agency has awarded nearly $16 million to dozens of Indiana shelters and groups that provide services to the homeless.
The grants announced Tuesday by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will go to more than 90 local housing and service programs.
The grants ranging from about $40,000 for Martinsville Plaza Apartments to more than $471,000 for Catholic Charities are part of the Obama administration's efforts to combat homelessness with housing and support services to homeless people and families.
HUD estimates that about 564,000 Americans are homeless on any given night. The agency says homelessness has fallen about 10 percent in the U.S. since 2010.
