WTTW's Geoffrey Baer visits Barrington's White House

Geoffrey Baer, the Emmy-award winning PBS architectural historian, will speak at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 13 at Barrington's White House, 145 W. Main St., in Barrington. Admission is $25.

Baer's many specials on Chicago architecture and history, including his six programs covering practically all of the suburban areas, have made him the face of WTTW for many viewers. He appears nightly on WTTW's flagship program "Chicago Tonight" answering questions in the "Ask Geoffrey" segment.

His Barrington White House lecture will be sure to give attendees insight into Northwest suburban architecture and Barrington's history. Tickets are available at the village hall and www.barringtonswhitehouse.com.

"Barrington's White House and Cultural Commission are honored that one of Chicago's most prominent TV personalities will be joining us to present interesting perspectives about our architectural history and surroundings," said Rollin Potter, Barrington White House cultural programming co-chair.

"We are also very appreciative of Barrington Bank and Trust's sponsorship of this event."

Baer, who marks his 27th year with WTTW this summer, enjoys bringing his stories, enthusiasm and conversational style to public gatherings. He also readily admits his limitations.

"People often don't realize that I can go into any community and there's always going to be some 50-year resident who knows more about the local history than I do," Baer said.

Instead, the writer/producer/program host says he tries to find interesting stories or those that help further understanding of how a local story relates to the broader picture. The growth of towns based on proximity to railroad lines, he said, is one example.

"I often come away from these lectures learning as much as the audience," Baer said. Check out www.barringtonswhitehouse.com for more information.

Viewers who enjoyed his 2013 PBS prime-time "Ten Buildings That Changed America" special can look forward to a new series in April.

This three-part special, "Ten That Changed America," explains the way 10 homes, 10 city parks and 10 towns made their mark on American culture. The programs will air at 8 p.m. Tuesdays, April 5, 12 and 19, on Channel 11.

All programs take place at Barrington's White House, 145 W. Main St. Visit www.barringtonswhitehouse.com to learn more.
