Immanuel fourth-graders have fun with STEAM Project

Recently, fourth-graders at Immanuel Lutheran in Palatine took on the challenge to "build something that moves" in an exercise designed to spark creativity, teach STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) concepts, and provide some good old-fashioned fun.

Four teams of students were assigned "stations," each set up with different materials from the popular Goldie Blox™ line. The challenge came with a twist, however. Teams were allowed only five minutes at each station before they had to rotate to another station, eventually ending up back where they started. The students worked well together and all did, in fact, build something that moves: two vehicles, a shopping cart, and a motorized dog that gives rides to kitty cats.

"The children are having a great time with STEAM. We are able to work on cooperation with class members and taking their learning to the next level through hands-on application. I couldn't be happier with the effort my students give in these projects and their ability to learn to be wrong and then determine how to fix it," said their teacher, Heidi Lundquist.

Lundquist partnered on this project with Trephina Bedell, Immanuel's children's ministry coordinator and mother of a fourth grade student.

"Giving the kids opportunities to develop peer relationships, work collaboratively, and value others ideas is nurtured at Immanuel. This is just one of many of the opportunities children have in this school," Bedell said.

Those opportunities will be showcased next month in an interactive environment. Immanuel Lutheran will hold a "Maker" night for the entire community from 6:30-8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5. Children will be able to "make" a variety of things, and activities will be STEAM-focused.
