Rain-swollen rivers flood houses, roads in central Serbia

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) - Rain-swollen rivers have flooded dozens of houses, farming land and roads in central Serbia, prompting authorities in several municipalities to declare emergency measures.

Serbian police said Monday that a few dozen people had to evacuate their homes in the area, while hundreds of houses remain under threat from the flooding.

Local authorities around the central Serbian town of Cacak have said that water has spread over dozens of acres of farmland, local roads and into the lower floors of houses. The floods have caused power cuts in some areas.

Officials say the flooding has been caused by small rivers overflowing from torrential rains. They have warned of possible landslides and road blockages from falling rocks.

Serbia was hit by major flooding in 2014 when dozens of people died.
