Man arrested after standoff in Waukegan

One person is in custody after an armed standoff ended peacefully early Monday in Waukegan, authorities said

Police Cmdr. Joe Florip said the standoff ended after a man was found hiding in the attic of a house on the 1700 block of Berwick Boulevard about 2:30 a.m. Police are not releasing the identity of the man because charges have not been filed, Florip said.

A woman called police to the house at 4:45 p.m. Sunday with claims she was having an argument with the man, who had a handgun, Florip said.

The woman left the house shortly after police arrived but told officers the man was still inside and armed, Florip said.

The Northern Illinois Police Alarm System team was called in, Florip said. Officers surrounded the house, but the man refused to come outside.

At 2:20 a.m., the team entered the house and searched for the man. He was found hiding in the attic and surrendered peacefully, Florip said.

Nearby houses were evacuated while police were at the scene. Florip said he didn't know when residents were allowed to return to their houses.

The standoff remains under investigation. Additional details will be released later, Florip said.
