Suburban residents remember Nancy Reagan as tough, influential
Illinois had a special place in Nancy Reagan's heart, suburban residents who worked with the former first lady said Sunday upon her passing. "It's a sad moment. She was a gracious lady and a real icon," said Elgin resident Don Totten, a former state senator who worked under Ronald Reagan for nearly a decade. "It'll be a tearful ceremony at the Reagan Library," he said of upcoming memorial services. "That's where she wants to be - by his side." Full story.
Rauner votes early in Arlington Heights
Like many across the state, Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner is a fan of early voting. Rauner and his wife, Diana Rauner, cast their votes for the upcoming primary Sunday at the Cook County early voting location in Arlington Heights village hall. "This is our democratic duty. It's our democratic right," he said. "It is what makes American democracy work. Get out and vote and have your voice be heard." He declined to say who earned his vote and has not publicly endorsed any of the GOP's presidential hopefuls ahead of the March 15 primary. Full story.
Man who died at Lake County jail identified
The Lake County coroner's office on Sunday identified the man who died after being found unresponsive in his county jail cell last week as 36-year-old David Butterfield of Zion. The coroner's office said preliminary findings of an autopsy indicate Butterfield died of natural causes attributable to advanced peritonitis, an inflammation of the thin tissue that lines the inner wall of the abdomen. Nuns join runners on trek through South Elgin
A contingent of nuns and about 150 other runners took to the streets of South Elgin on Sunday for the second annual Run for the Nuns 5K to help raise money for the Imagine Sisters Movement. To help warm up and keep up fellow runners' spirits, the nuns took to dancing in the parking lot of the Thornwood Community Center as music poured out nearby speakers. Full story.
