Assessor extends deadline for veterans' exemptions

Cook County Assessor Joseph Berrios has extended the exemption application deadline for the Disabled Veterans Homeowner Exemption and the Returning Veterans Homeowner Exemption to March 17.

"It is our privilege to assist the men and women who have worked to preserve our freedom and we want to ensure that as many veterans as possible receive the exemption savings they so richly deserve," Berrios said.

Effective with Tax Year 2015 (billed in 2016), disabled veterans are eligible for greater property tax relief under a new state law being administered by Berrios. The assessor said he has long supported exemptions for veterans.

Taxpayers can call the assessor's office at (312) 443-7550 and request an application form be mailed to them.
