Man dies after diving into canal to flee Chicago police
CHICAGO (AP) - Authorities in Chicago say one of several men fleeing police after their minivan ran a stop sign has jumped into the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal and died.
He was one of three men in the vehicle when it was stopped by officers around midnight Friday. As officers approached, the driver sped off and later stopped on the southern edge of Cicero.
The three men got out and ran, including one who jumped into the canal.
Fire Department divers pulled him from the water and paramedics performed CPR. Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford says he was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in critical condition and later died.
