Wheeling man held on drug charges

A Wheeling man who prosecutors say had cocaine hidden in what appeared to be a beverage can in his refrigerator was ordered held on $75,000 bail Friday on charges of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.

Vandan Echeverria, 22, of the 0-100 block of First Street, was arrested about 5:30 a.m. Friday after members of the Illinois State Police North Central Narcotics Task Force executed a search warrant at his home, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney David Shin.

Inside, police found 4.5 grams of cocaine with a street value of about $1,450 in a beverage can with a false center, Shin said. Also in the can were 41 individually wrapped pills that police determined were Ecstasy and had a street value of about $400, Shin said.

Police also recovered 39 grams of marijuana worth about $800, scales, drug packaging and currency, Shin said.

Echeverria was convicted in 2013 of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and sentenced to one year in prison. He also received 24 months of probation in 2014 in DuPage County for possession of a controlled substance.

Cook County Judge Joseph Cataldo ordered Echeverria to submit to a curfew and home electronic monitoring if he posts bail.
