Prospect's Villasin grabs a spot in Queen of the Hill competition
Prospect senior Angelina Villasin will represent Class 4A girls basketball in Saturday's 3-point shooting contest finale at Redbird Arena in Normal.
In Friday's Class 4A finals, Villasin made 8 shots to better the other 4A competitors - Ali Andrews of Huntley (5), Stephanie Stec of Lincoln-Way North (5) and Sarah Lyons of Ottawa (4).
"It was fun, but there were nerves the whole time," Villasin said. "It's my senior year so it's a great way to end the season. I didn't even think I'd get out of regionals.
"My teammate Haley Will was here last year and I was able to come and watch her so I was able to take what I saw her do, and that helped me a lot."
Joining Villasin in the Queen of the Hill finale at 1:30 p.m. Saturday will be junior Hailie Williams of Lincoln (Class 3A), junior Cami Meddows of Trenton Wesclin (Class 2A) and sophomore Arieal Scott of Danville Schlarman (Class 1A).
"Whatever happens, happens," said Villasin. "It doesn't really matter. I got farther than I ever thought I would."
Andrews, a Huntley senior and unanimous first-team all-stater, made 5 3s Friday after hitting 11 on Thursday to advance.
"It feels great to be back down here," she said. "I got to play here as a freshman and it's an experience you never forget."
Andrews' terrific high school career included one state trip and two sectional titles - both followed by losses to Fremd in supersectionals the last two years.
"It's a blessing to be able to make it as far as we did. Fremd is a good team and I'm rooting for them."
