Morton, North Lawndale win 3A semifinals

NORMAL - Junior Brandi Bipsing scored 21 points, including making 19 of 21 free throw attempts, and had 8 rebounds as defending champion and No. 1 ranked Morton defeated No. 2 Morgan Park 54-39 Friday in the Class 3A girls basketball state semifinals at Redbird Arena.

Jadison Wharram added 15 points for the Potters (32-3), who will take on Chicago North Lawndale Saturday for the state championship.

Morton had 3 less field goals than Morgan Park (30-4) but the Potters made 28 of 35 from the free-throw line while the Mustangs only went to the line twice.

Josie Becker added 8 points for Morton, which led 24-16 at halftime and then outscored the Mustangs 10-2 in the third quarter.

Gabrielle Cooper led Morgan Park with 13 points and Mia Bradley had 8 but Morton held Mustangs all-stater Destiny Harden to just 2 points before she fouled out.

Morgan Park plays Highland on Saturday for third place.

North Lawndale 59, Highland 57 (2 OTs): Kia Brooks scored 21 points and Jada Thorpe added 13 as North Lawndale (23-11) outlasted Highland in the first Class 3A semifinal in double overtime. Amanda Ponce had 24 points for Highland (30-5) and Madison Wellen added 9.
