About 1,600 Illinois jobs targeted by companies closing, cutting back
More than 1,600 jobs statewide are expected to disappear in coming months due to companies either closing or cutting their workforce, according to state documents posted online on Friday.
The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity said companies in Elk Grove Village, Gurnee, Elgin, Prospect Heights, Bensenville and elsewhere are among those that have filed WARN reports in February. WARN reports notify the state of upcoming layoffs and closures.
Local companies include:
•Arrow Plastic Manufacturing Co., 701 E. Devon Ave. in Elk Grove Village, said it would close and affect about 165 workers. Owner Bruce Ronner said he is close to an agreement to sell Arrow to a new owner and to avert the closure. He declined to identify that company.
•Ultra Foods, 1241 N. Rand Road in Prospect Heights, told the state it will lay offs 98 workers when the store closes. Derek Kinney, vice president of human resources, said the grocery store closed on March 1 and the affected workers are being paid through April 18. The company is owned by Highland, Indiana-based Strack & Van Til and there are 19 more stores around the Chicago suburbs, he said.
•Sodexo Inc./Ridge Family Center for Learning, 650 Ridge Ave. in Elk Grove Village, said it is closing and 54 jobs are affected.
•IlliniCare Health, 999 Oakmont Plaza Dr. in Westmont, is cutting 68 workers after a contract expired, said company spokesman Danny Lysouvakon.
•Tek-Cast Inc., a machine tool manufacturer at 245 Park St. in Bensenville, said it would close and affect 119 workers. A company spokesman did not immediately respond.
•Computer Systems Institute Inc., a computer training firm at 400 Airport Road in Elgin, 5330 Grand Avenue in Gurnee, 29 E. Madison St. in Chicago, and 8930 Gross Point Road in Skokie, plan to close. It affects a combined 172 workers. A company spokesman did not immediately respond.
•TDC Filter Manufacturing Inc., 2 Territorial Court in Bolingbrook, an industrial and commercial fan and blower manufacturer, is closing and 91 jobs are affected. A company spokesman did not immediately respond.
