Food trucks scope out new territory in Carbondale

CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) - Food truck vendors are getting ready to roll into Carbondale following approval of an ordinance allowing them to operate on certain public properties, including near the town square.

The Southern Illinoisan newspaper reports (http://bit.ly/1QsoIke) restaurant owners say they welcome the competition. Longbranch Cafe general manager Elaine Ramseyer says "the more options, the better" for food lovers.

The Carbondale City Council approved an ordinance last week. It allows food trucks near the town square, Turley and Attucks parks and the Superblock Sports Multi-Complex.

City officials say vendors will need permits from the Jackson County Health Department and the city.

Sean Hopkins is among the food truck vendors showing interest. He says he'll explore bringing his Say Cheese truck to Carbondale's town square.
