Commander of the Lake County crime task force retiring

WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) - The commander of the Lake County Major Crime Task Force, which investigated the death of Fox Lake police Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz, is stepping down.

Round Lake Park Police Chief George Filenko will retire from the task force on April 1.

Lake County sheriff's office Detective Christopher Covelli says Filenko will remain with the task force on an as-needed advisory capacity.

Filenko said his decision to step down has been in the works for about a year. He says he wound up staying longer than planned because of the volume of active homicide cases.

The task force under Filenko investigated Gliniewicz's death last year, which was ruled a suicide. Authorities say he shot himself because he feared discovery of embezzlement from the Fox Lake Police Explorer Post, a program for teens interested in law enforcement careers.
