Immanuel Lutheran Will Send 9 Students to Regional Science Fair

Immanuel Lutheran held its science fair on Thursday, January 21. Nineteen 7th graders qualified for, and nine of them will participate in, the IJAS Region 6 Science Fair being held at Niles North High School in Skokie on Saturday. The purpose of the fair is "to allow students an opportunity to communicate their research results and to promote discussion of their work with scientific colleagues."

In order to qualify to participate in the Regional Science Fair, students had to earn a rating of "Outstanding" or "First Place" during Immanuel's Science Fair. Qualifying students' projects covered a myriad of topics including: evaporation, the effect of antacids on pepsin, fruit batteries, and a comparison of water usage between baths and showers. Projects fell into many disciplines of science: behavioral science, biochemistry, chemistry, electronics, environmental science, microbiology, and physics. "While a middle school science fair project may never solve any great problems, it can ignite a love of science and instill a desire to continue research into high school, college, and beyond. Understanding the process of scientific investigation can lead to lifelong curiosity and learning," stated Delaine Schiestel, science fair sponsor and principal.

At the IJAS Region 6 Science Fair on Saturday, students have a chance to qualify for the Illinois Junior Academy of Science (IJAS) State Exposition on May 13-14, 2016 at Milliken University. The Illinois Junior Academy of Science State Exposition is the largest high school and middle school research competition in Illinois. Students will compete for scholarships, best in category awards and other special awards.
