No bail for Arlington Heights teen facing multiple felony charges

An Arlington Heights teen awaiting trial on burglary charges was ordered held without bond Tuesday on new charges of attempted armed robbery and attempted carjacking.

Julio Ponce-Patino, 18, of the 200 block of Lake-Cook Road, could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted of the latest charges.

Authorities say a resident of an apartment complex in the 1400 block of Rand Road observed Ponce-Patino walking back and forth outside her building about 5:30 p.m. Saturday. The woman thought he might be the owner of a lost wallet her husband found in the parking lot earlier that day, said Cook County assistant state's attorney Maureen McGee.

McGee said when the woman asked Ponce-Patino if he was looking for his wallet, he threatened her with a knife, grabbed her hand and demanded her car keys. He fled after the woman screamed, McGee said.

About 1:30 p.m. Monday, prosecutors say Ponce-Patino was wielding a knife when he approached a female driver - whose infant and toddler were in her car - and demanded her car keys, McGee said. He ran after the woman screamed, McGee said.

A witness alerted police, who found Ponce-Patino a short distance away, McGee said.

He next appears in court on March 24.
