Hundreds to shave head for childhood cancer research
You may notice a few more bald people around your community this month. St. Baldrick has something to do with that.
The suburbs will play host this month to some of the more than 900 head-shaving fundraisers being held nationwide to benefit the St. Baldrick's Foundation. Founded in 2000, the foundation raises funds to support research into cures for childhood cancer.
Starting with a single head-shaving event in New York more than 16 years ago, the movement has since grown to more than 900 events scheduled this year, many in the suburbs and Chicago.
Participants agree to have their locks shorn completely in exchange for donations to the cause. So far this year, more than $8 million has been pledged toward the foundation's cancer research grants, and nearly 16,000 people have registered to shave their heads in a show of support for children undergoing cancer treatments.
