Fire damages four Palatine apartment units

A fire first spotted on the balcony of an eight-unit apartment building in Palatine just after midnight Saturday left four units uninhabitable, but no one was injured, fire officials said.

Firefighters received the call to the two-story building on the 900 block of West Panorama Drive at 12:08 a.m.

Crews arrived at 12:14 a.m. to see heavy smoke coming from the rear of the building and located its source as an active fire on a second-story balcony.

The fire was declared under control at 12:35 a.m. through the efforts of 21 firefighters. An ambulance and engine crew from the Palatine Rural Fire Protection District assisted crews from the Palatine Fire Department. An ambulance from the Long Grove Fire District moved to a Palatine station to respond to any additional calls during the fire.

The apartment where the balcony was on fire sustained the most significant damage, but three others were also left uninhabitable, officials said.

No cause had been determined or damage estimate made as of Saturday afternoon.
