We need politicians who are like priest
Is Father Pfleger a priest or a politician? Is there anything in canon law that indicates that he cannot be both?
Most of us know Father Pfleger via our televisions or newspaper articles written about him. He is seen quite regularly speaking with great passion about St. Sabina's and the community he represents.
Father Pfleger doesn't look or sound like any priest I've ever known, but he isn't representing my demographic. He's in the trenches. He fights for the many in his parish who have no voice and little representation in City Hall.
Perhaps Father Pfleger understands that the 20 minute homily spoken from the pulpit isn't enough to get his flock engaged. Perhaps he feels his vocation involves immersion into the lives of his parishioners. I don't know how or what the man thinks. I wouldn't be the one to comment on his "calling."
What I do know is that it would be inspirational to have a Pfleger-like representative in the Illinois state government who would be willing to fight for the people who elected him/her and get some activation going.
Perhaps then we could get some momentum from the representatives who "tell" us that our wishes are important and are acted upon.
