Central Indiana man gets 65 years for killing 1-year-old

GREENFIELD, Ind. (AP) - A central Indiana man convicted of killing his 1-year-old daughter has been sentenced to 65 years in prison.

Thirty-one-year-old Matthew Wagoner of Greenfield was sentenced Wednesday after a jury convicted him of the May murder of his daughter Zoey. He also was sentenced to 2ˆ½ years on probation for felony neglect of a dependent resulting in death.

Police reports showed the girl died of blunt-force trauma. Experts testified during the trial that her liver was lacerated and she likely would have been in extreme pain for hours before her death.

The child's mother, 33-year-old Jessica Wagoner, pleaded guilty to four charges and is due to be sentenced March 2.

Text messages between the two showed they were concerned child protection workers would get involved if they sought medical help.
